NANAMIC: Consultations NANAMIC represents the particular needs of the Further Education Mathematics Community on various advisory groups. These include the Joint Mathematical Council of the UK (JMC) and the Mathematics Expert Group of the DfES Standards Unit. Our consultations include those with the Advisory Committee on Mathematics Education (ACME) and the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA). This enables us to give an effective voice to the FE Maths community. We work closely with other organisations such as the Association of Teachers of Mathematics (ATM) and the Mathematics Association (MA). We value hearing your opinions and invite you to consider joining our email consultancy group. ( email: committee@nanamic.org.uk ). Revision of the Level 4 Subject Specifications for Teachers of Adult Literacy, Numeracy & ESOL NANAMIC has sent representatives to consultation meetings and has submitted a formal response to the proposed specifications. How do you see "functional mathematics" ? How should it be assessed? If you have views, let them know. NANAMIC is still engaged in the discussions on functional mathematics and would welcome a copy your comments so we know the thinking of our members. ( email: committee@nanamic.org.uk ) In response to the 14-19 Education & Skills White Paper NANAMIC was asked for views on how mathematics education should develop generally by a consortium including the University of Leeds. Also worth looking at are: the Mathematics in Education and Industry paper at http://www.mei.org.uk/curriculum/posn_papers.shtml Comments welcome to committee@nanamic.org.uk Cuts in AS/Alevel Maths provision for adult students? At the stakeholder conference on the 17th October the NANAMIC Secretary mentioned that A level maths classes for adults were closing in various parts of the country due to funding pressures. Alice Onion from QCA has contacted NANAMIC saying " It would be very helpful if you could put me in touch with people who have specific evidence on this. I think the maths board at the DfES would be interested to know about this unintended consequence."
Please could you reply directly to Alice at
info@qca.org.uk if you know of any colleges where this has happened. A
copy to us at
committee@nanamic.org.uk would help us to gather evidence as well.
