Dear
Principal
Mathematics and Numeracy issues are at the heart of the work of the National Association for Numeracy and Mathematics in Colleges (NANAMIC). We exist to represent and promote the concerns of Further Education within the Mathematics and Numeracy community and to provide professional development events to support the work of tutors in improving teaching and learning.
This
letter outlines our role. Further details can be obtained from our website www.nanamic.org.uk
NANAMIC represents the views of the FE Mathematics and Numeracy Community on various advisory groups. These include the Joint Mathematical Council of the UK (JMC) and the Mathematics Expert Group of the DfES Standards Unit. We are consulted by the Advisory Committee on Mathematics Education (ACME) and the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA). We work closely with other organisations such as the Association of Teachers of Mathematics (ATM) and the Mathematics Association (MA).
In
response to the needs of our members, we organise training events of direct
relevance to FE. Our theme this year, ‘Raising Standards through Active
Learning’, supports and builds on the Success for All Strategy for mathematics,
developed and implemented by the Standards Unit. Member Colleges have one
free place on a training event and reduced fees for additional places and other
events. Events are typically hosted by one of our Member Colleges enabling us to
keep fees to a minimum.
Our
most recent training event was a rerun of the highly successful ‘Mathematics
and Dyslexia’ event led by Julie
Kay, Headteacher of Mark College. The next training day will be in April when
David Ireland from Oxford and Cherwell Valley College will present “Games and
Activities for Levels 1 and 2”.
In
addition, we run an annual one day conference at the end of June at which a wide
range of workshops are offered. This year we are pleased to announce that the
keynote speech will be given by Dr Malcolm Swan from Nottingham
University.
We notice that your
college is not a member of NANAMIC. We
would value the support of your college by you:
Yours
sincerely
Dr
D Martin FIMA
Chair
of NANAMIC
