Do you have a favourite numeracy or maths site to recommend to colleagues?

Dear Colleague

NANAMIC has, for a number of years, been working closely with the Association of Mathematics Education Teachers (AMET), Association of Teachers of Mathematics (ATM), Mathematical Association (MA) and National Association for Mathematics Advisors (NAMA) to strengthen the Mathematics Education Community in its ability to speak with a strong voice on issues of common concern and to take part in joint work together.

How might we develop our work together while retaining our distinctive voices and grow our relevance to the communities that we serve? Different options have been put forward at different times by members of the five associations and with the help of some financial support of the National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics (NCETM) an independent consultant Geoffrey Penzer has been able to draw these options together for us in the form of a discussion paper EMPOWERING TEACHERS OF MATHEMATICS – A PAPER FOR DISCUSSION to be presented simultaneously to members of AMET, ATM, MA, NAMA and NANAMIC. Those with membership of more than one association will receive this paper from all the associations of which they are a member. We will canvas on this occasion not only full members of NANAMIC but also those who have attended NANAMIC events recently or recently been members.

The paper presents background and three options. Its purpose is to generate discussion and gauge feelings and to seek to identify your lead in determining the best way forward. We recognise the challenge that faces subject associations and the need to provide a clear voice for mathematics and numeracy teaching and learning in the lifelong learning sector. How this voice is maintained or even enhanced may well be done as part of a different structure. The NANAMIC Committee commend this paper to you as a useful starting point for discussion on this.

Following the paper are a few words from the NANAMIC Committee. A questionnaire for responses is also provided. We look forward to hearing from you.

 Yours sincerely

Alan Cossins
