Mathematics in Context - Geoff Wake

Geoff challenged us to consider our attitudes to contextualisation in mathematics and to the role that it can play in leading students into new mathematical concepts.

He contrasted the way in which skilled mathematicians work in moving from the maths to a problem which illustrates the principles, while in employment there are problems which maths might be useful in solving.

Using examples from AS Use of Maths, Geoff encouraged us to make our lessons stimulating to students who want their maths “to be about something”.
